why is the Reader display greyed out with a checkerboard pattern?

When I open a document in Acrobat Reader, it comes up greyed out with a light grey checkerboard pattern.

How do I get a plain ungreyed out display, please?

I read the answer and then couldn't find "GRID" - that's because I'm using Adobe Reader and not Acrobat Reader.
I right clicked the document I'd opened and then clicked "PAGE DISPLAY PREFERENCE" and then unclicked "Show transparency grid" and the problem was solved.
So I guess if I'd phrased my question properly, the answer would have led me straight there - but it told me what I was looking for - so Thank You Very Much!

Check if Grid is ticked under the View menu.

Just for future reference, there's no product called "Acrobat Reader", it's just Acrobat, or Adobe Acrobat.
