PDF: Portable Document Format, specified in ISO 32000.

PDF/A: Portable Document Format for Archival, specifed in ISO 19005

PDF/A is a subset of PDF, specifically defined for long term storage.

To see the differences, study the two ISO standards.

Hope this can help.
