How do you use the erase icon to erase certain text within the pfd document?

There is a "pencil erase" icon for comments and it only works on comments added by the pencil tool.

Can you be more specific about what you are trying to accomplish?

There are tools like text and object touchup that provide limited editing.

With the Professional version one can use the Redaction tool.

Do you have Adobe Acrobat? This is not possible with just the free Adobe Reader.

There are two ways to "erase" text. One is to use the "Edit Text & Images" tool (Tools>Content Editing>Edit Text & Images). With the tool active, you can then select text and delete it. If it's text within what Acrobat considers to be a group of text (e.g. a paragraph), the rest of this group will adjust.

The second method (and the only safe way to remove text that you definitely do not want in your document anymore, but only available in "Professional") is the redaction feature (Tools>Protection>Mark for redaction/Apply Redactions). Here you are basically using "whiteout" on top of the text, nothing will reflow, but the content under your redaction mark gets removed from the document so that it can no longer be recovered (which is not true with the first method).
