Can you let us know what version of Reader and operating system you're running? Also, does this occur when opening a PDF in a browser (which one) or standalone?
It is acrobat XI. The operating system is windows 7. It occurs both in a browser (ie) and standalone. More frequent when viewed in internet explore.

Can you try temporarily turning off Protected View to see if this might be related to the problem? Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced).
