When I insert a pdf into an existing pdf, the fonts from the original pdf get replaced. Than I get the error " Consolidating duplicate fonts" and then the text gets very screwed up

This is usually an indication that one of the files is corrupt and using a font naming mechanism that does not follow the PDF standard. You are very likely dealing with subset embedded fonts in both document (or at least one of them uses a subset). When you merge the two files, Acrobat assumes that both fonts are the same (because both are named the same way), but they are not. That's why things get screwed up. Which version of Acrobat do you have? Pro or Standard?
With Pro, you could try to unembed the font - as long as you have it on your system - and then re-embed it to see if that fixes the problem.
