What are content streams and why is it taking up 57% of my document?

I optimized my document and content streams went from 4.6% to 57%.
Images went from 4.3% to 29%
Document overhead went from 90% to 2.14%

Content is the "data" (text, images, form fields, comments) within the PDF. A whole book covers the PDF format.
