Tools pane missing

why does my tools pane not show my tools, but only the share, create, etc items...it is very frustrating.

It sounds like you have both Acrobat and Reader installed, and Reader is used as the default app.
Try opening Acrobat manually, and then go to Edit - Preferences - General and click on Select Default PDF Handler, where you could select which app to use.

I am supposed to be using Acrobat X - yesterday I could open a file from, the lesson book and the tools pane would show as supposed to, so then I could open the file I needed to work on and it would then open correctly...but today I can open any lesson plan so far and they don't even open correctly....I know that surely it is either a glitch or something I've clicked and not knowing it - I am still very new to Acrobat X - so I feel very helpless but I need to be able to edit some text so badly....I'm working on updating a family history book.
