Maximum Acrobat page size

I create hierarchal maps for documentation within companies. These maps can be as wide as 5m (the maximum size in Adobe Illustrator). For my client to view these, I send in a PDF format.

Some of my smaller maps can be saved easily in a PDF format. When I try to PDF the wider maps I get the error 'The dimensions of this page are out-of-range'.

If I scale down these larger maps, I can then PDF them perfectly.

What I would like to know is, "What are the maximum dimensions for a PDF?", then I can shrink my large maps to this size and not overly so.

Cheers!

200 inches.
Or, perhaps larger using /UserUnits.

It depends on how you create your PDF files, and which PDF compatibility level you use. A "modern"' PDF file can be 15,000,000 inches in each direction, but is you are printing to PDF via Distiller, you will be limited to 200 inches. Have you tried to save your document to PDF directly in Illustrator? Which version of Illustrator are you using?

I ran a quick test in Illustrator CC, and even though Illustrator uses a subset of PDF as it's own file format, when you go past 200x200" you cannot save your Illustrator document as a PDF. You would think that Adobe would add the capability to use UserUnits to Illustrator documents that are larger than 200", but that does not seem to be the case. I even tried to rename the .ai file to .pdf and to open it in Acrobat, but hat cropped the document to 200x200" (don't do this to create PDF out of Illustrator however, I am a professional on a closed course, and I know what I am doing :) )

So, it looks like you are out of luck when one of your dimensions is larger than 200".
