In Acrobat Pro X (on a Mac, anyway) you can just "Save As..." ->Microsoft Word, and choose the Word format of choice. You can't do this in Reader - just save as Text.

experiment with this: export to (or save PDF as) TIFF (res setting at least 300 dpi). open the TIFF in Microsoft Office Document Imaging (aka MODI, comes with MS Office Pro). MODI has a tool to OCR and deliver output to Word.

This works well with single-column documents, but not for multi-column ones. With those, Acrobat's optical character recognition function will often read from left to right across all the columns at once, and scramble the text from all of them together. I haven't yet learned of a way to isolate individual columns in the PDF and have them read one at a time.
