I have been provided with departmental Adobe XI pro instead of Adobe 9 Pro that I use to had.Could you please advice me how could I run the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for a pdf document?

Go to menu View -> Tools -> Text Recognition and you will be able to recognize text in the current file ("In This File") or "In Multiple Files":
