How can I get my bookmarks to automatically highlight.

I have bookmarks added to a 1500 page document. My client would like the bookmark to highlight when the viewer is in a particular section. Currently, my bookmarks do highlight when you are on the bookmarked page (or the first page of the document) but it "un-highlights" when you navigate to page two of that section. They send me a sample where the bookmark stays highlighted until you reach a new section. How do I accomplish this?

What application and version are you using to read the PDF? Acrobat, Adobe Reader or other software?
Could you share a sample?

If you take a look at the bookmarks tree in each document you will notice that the file that acts the way you want has "double-banner" icons and your file has "single-banner" icons in the bookmarks.
Those "double-banner" icons are generated when you combine different PDF's into a single one.
To get that effect you would have to split your document with Adobe Acrobat, splitting by "Top level bookmarks", for more than one level, and after that combine the split documents, from bottom to top, into a single document.

Is it ok to use the "combine PDF" function or do I need to merge them another way?

Yes, you must use the "combine PDF" function. You can go to the menu File -> Create -> Combine Files Into A Single PDF.

I successfully got my document to produce the double bookmark symbol for the bookmarks, but now nothing highlights. I am sure I missed a step. Here is what I did:

1.Divided the document into individual PDFs (one for each bookmark).
2.Using the "combine PDF Files" I combined the Sections that used secondary bookmarks. The I combined the files into one large file using the same feature.
3.I need to rename the bookmarks, but they do not highlight. What am I missing?
