You can generate a table of contents in Acrobat, but it's usually much easier to do that in the application in which you've created your document (e.g. MS Word) before you convert to PDF. If you want to do it in Acrobat, here are the steps:

  1. Insert a new blank page into the document (e.g. via right-clicking on a page in the page thumbnails view, and selecting to Insert Pages>Blank Page
  2. Use the "Tools>Content Editing>Add Text" tool to add your table of content information
  3. Use the link tool ("Tools>Content Editing>Add or edit link") to add links to your table of contents that will bring you to the appropriate page when somebody clicks on a table entry.

MS Word will do all this automatically if you use the PDFMaker to convert from Word to PDF (that's the Acrobat item on the Word toolbar/ribbon).

Thank you for your kindness in giving valuable answers to my question. I am working with a complex investigation in a civil case where the counterpart has provided 515 pages in affidavits and writs, imagine. 515 pages, to handle this huge information which I had to scan and save as pdf, I had to Optimize the combined files making the 515 pages, and bookmark them. I found a valuable article by Mr. Rick Borstein on how to add TOC to a PDF documentwith Evermap's AutoBookmark. He wrote that he was very thrilled at his discovery of the product and indeed his article and idea there was very helpful, as the program does what it promises, imagine having 515 pages with 71 bookmarks to be copied and listed and then entered as linkes to the relevant pages, such a task was done within less than 7 seconds by Evermap's Autobookmark, I think that I must purchase this product as a plugg inn to the most valuabble acrobat program.
