How does Acrobat determine to switch to PDF/A Viewing Mode?

When I open a PDF that seems to be a PDF/A Acrobat switches to PDF/A Viewing Mode (if not disabled). But how does Acrobat determine that a PDF confirms to the PDF/A-Standard? I recognized that if I validate such a PDF with Preflight it sometimes turnes out not to be a valid PDF/A.

If I remember correctly (please correct me if I am wrong), Acrobat looks at an according entry in the metadata. It does not analyze the document. And there is a long-going discussion about Acrobat's behavior being "over-eager" to protect the user against making a mistake and break PDF/A.

I can't remember exactly which metadata entry is considered.

Hope this can help a little bit.
