Embed Word and PDF files. Link to them. Send PDF with embedded linked files.

With Acrobat X Pro, how do I embed Word and PDF documents, then make links to them. I don't want to have to attach and send the actual files along with the PDF. I want the user to simply click on the link that opens the Word of PDF file.

Hi

You have a few alternatives,

The first one I don't think you will use but here it is...
Create the file as a security envelop this will attach all files to a single file. Even tho it says security envelop doesnt have to be encrypted.

2nd one...
Have you considered the portfolio option in acrobat.

3rd one...
Do your files have to be still in native word format, you could convert to PDF and append to end of master document and create links from within

Finally,
If you really want to keep the native word document intact and have the PDF link to the word document or PDF then the files have to be accessible to the user from a web server. You could then create links that would basically send them to open it or download it.

Hope these help?

Hello there - thank you for your response. As it turns out, I had arrived at your solution three as the best for my application and thank you for the validation that I wasn't missing a better alternative. Portfolios I had considered but discarded, and the security option I didn't know about, but now do and will surely use at another time thanks.

One other question for you: when my client reviewed the document on his laptop, the PDF opened at 144%, the screen width which was readable. When he clicked on the links, however, the linked document opened at 70%, too small to read. Is it possible to control at what size the linked document(s) opens?

Hi

Glad you came up with the same solutions as mine! and got it working!

Yes with regards to your last point about the initial view you can set the default view. If you have links already on your page that open up another page within the document, double click the link with the select object tool, then select the actions panel on the right. Then it should say something like 'Go to a page in this document' then click Edit. You can then set the intial view by % or by 'fit to page'

If your links open a new PDF, you could set the initial view in the new PDF (File – Properties – Intial View)

Hope this helps?
