Adding columns of numbers on forms

I have a form with point values that need to be added for a total sum and then grand total of several totals.

Is there a way to make them add without knowing Java? (If no, can you explain Java to a novice of Acrobat)
Can I put a check box next to the number value to be added? or some other way for selection to be made?

thanks you for your help...

Yes there is. Acrobat has a feature for summing a group of fields.
