PDF is not an editable format. You can make minor adjustments using the Text TouchUp Tool, or the Redaction tool to remove elements from the file, but don't count on it for anything more than very minor things.

I don't know if you are on a Mac or Windows machine but there's a nifty little program called PDFpen that allows you to edit a file a bit more easily than Acrobat Pro. You can find it here. I would be surprised if there wasn't something similar for Windows.

Regardless of the "tool" used it is good to know/understand that PDF is not a file format intended to support the sort of edit / format / layout changes you can do with word processing (Word Perfect, Word, FrameMaker, InDesign, Open Office, etc.).

You are able to do minor touchups. More than that can result in a goobered PDF.
If a series of minor edits are to be done it helps to do incremental save as to make a string of PDFs (file01.pdf, file02.pdf, etc.) so that all work is not lost if an "oops" happens.

Here is a short tutorial that explains how to edit text in Acrobat X Std. or Pro.

And here is another tutorial that explains how to edit objects in Acrobat X Pro. (this is not available in the Std. version).
