Why is search not finding the correct words in a document.

I am using either Adobe Acrobat X Pro or Adobe Acrobat Reader X.
Search or Find does not locate the same word being searched for in the document. Instead it finds non-related words or characters.
The document was originally a WORD file converted to a PDF file.
