That's Highly unusual.
Have you tried Repairing Permission (Disk Utility in the Utilities Directory)
Have you Tried Checking Fonts for a Defective Font or Duplicate Font. Although these steps were written a geared for MS Office they Still work for any Font Problem with any application. Choose either one or the other:

Quit Acrobat and Remove your Adobe Font Caches Files. Easiest method:
- Download Utility FontNuke.
- Install Close up all Programs except FontNuke.
- Run in administrator Mode
- Restart computer when asked.
Open Acrobat then Try a PDF.
