Are PDF files protected? I had an invoice designed for me by someone but I now need to make minor changes to the design. I have Adobe x1 pro but it won't save the changes I make.

Not unless someone applied security restrictions to them... If you have Acrobat then you should be able to edit it, to some extent. But you should really get the original file format from the person who created it for you.

As noted the PDF could have had security applied to the PDF to allow filling form fields and possibly some other actions.

Another possibility is that the PDF has had "Extended Reader Rights" applied to the PDF to allow users with Reader prior to Reader XI to save or email the PDF. If this is the case you need to perform a "Save as.." to remove the added feature. Then close and open the new file.

You have to look at the "Security" for the open PDF and look the contents of the page to determine if either of these situations applies.
